![]() ![]() There was something so typically Everton about Martinez's attempt to remedy a misfiring system devoid of width with an even narrower one. This latest instalment of tactical roulette ranks as the most perplexing to date. Those in blue are fighting a losing battle with the tactics assigned to them, and in a team so devoid of confidence or the slightest hint of belief, it is beginning to prove fatal. There is no unity or understanding in evidence across the team. Failure to adapt and adjust has left a group of players resembling strangers in a broken system. The same problems continue to generate the same outcomes. This could easily be a rewrite of the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday, albeit with the occasional minor alteration. The reality is the problems facing this group run much deeper than weary limbs. Tired legs and a congested fixture list formed part of the reasoning offered for this latest misery. It would be more of a shock if Everton performed well in a league match. The overwhelming air of inevitability attached to this abject run of results has almost created resignation. ![]() Stoke scoring twice while winning the match with alarming ease no longer generates the shock of months past. These figures are not due to small margins, bad luck or near misses the results fit the performances accompanying them. The damning statistics speak for themselves. This latest defeat means the defence has already shipped more goals (41) than the whole of last season (39). Statistically, this is the worst season in 88 years for a team with one win in 12 league games. This inept, leaderless, shapeless mess deserved worse than the two-goal margin inflicted. On this occasion, though, Martinez was right - the performance in the 2-0 defeat at Stoke did not get the result it deserved. Martinez has resolutely stood by this mantra throughout the season, its delivery becoming as predictable as the tactics of the manager voicing it. Everton manager Roberto Martinez's trademark "we haven't got the results that our performances deserve" is a sure thing for anybody chasing a full house in post-match news conference bingo. ![]()
